About the production

Christmas Eve brings together the poetic world of Karel Jaromír Erben and Jiří Suchý’s distinctive theatrical language. With deep respect for the Czech literary tradition, the production creates space for humour, music and quiet moments in which ordinary human life touches something mysterious.

Against the backdrop of a magical Christmas Eve, stories of love, hope, human longing and inevitable fate unfold. Folk poetry blends naturally with live music, gentle irony and vivid imagery, leaving the audience room for their own imagination.

The result is neither a historical reconstruction nor a conventional dramatisation. It is contemporary theatre that respectfully builds on the legacy of Czech literary classics and offers a new perspective on one of the most beautiful Christmas ballads.

The world of the production

A world emerges between folk poetry, music and imagery, where the magic of Christmas Eve meets humour, love and inevitable fate.

01

Production

The production process brought together Erben’s ballad poetry, Jiří Suchý’s texts, Ferdinand Havlík’s music and movement into a single theatrical whole. The production was created as live musical theatre, where words, songs, imagery and silence carry equal weight.

02

Scenography

The scenography does not recreate a literal historical cottage interior, but builds the production’s world from powerful symbols. A spinning wheel, a lantern, a frozen window, a white lily and the surface of a lake become images of longing, love and fate entering human lives in the course of a single night.

03

Costumes

The costumes draw on the Czech rural setting without attempting a folkloric reconstruction. They work with simplicity, layering and a winter palette, while subtle festive details suggest that on Christmas Eve the everyday world briefly opens itself to mystery.

04

Direction

The directing concept is built on the contrast between Erben’s dark ballad atmosphere and Jiří Suchý’s warm, playful humour. Reality flows seamlessly into song, memory or vision, while individual images come together like a Christmas Eve dream in which joy can touch pain in a single instant.

05

Lighting

The lighting concept distinguishes the warmth of home from the cold world beyond the window. The amber glow of lanterns meets blue winter light, while sharp lighting transitions, shadows and a gentle haze create space for prophecy, dreams and images hidden beneath the frozen surface.

First productions are more than the beginning of a journey. They are the moment when determination, friendship and a shared passion give birth to theatre.

Christmas is only the beginning.

Every Christmas Eve brings new hope.
And some stories live within us long after the final candle has burned out.

Believe.
